Miss Frederick was my favorite teacher. I remember when I was assigned to her class, her reputation was that she was tough. Being a shy kid, I was a little scared. In the afternoon, she would tell us to put our heads down and then she would read to us. It was my favorite part of the day. One day she pulled out Madeline L'Engle's book A Wrinkle in Time. Wow! I went away understanding the power of a book to transport you to another world. When my children were little and I would pull out a book to read to them, I would always remember those quiet afternoons in the fifth-grade classroom and the sound of Miss Frederick's voice. Miss Frederick expected the best from you and I believe that she always gave the best of herself to us. Looking back, what a wonderful gift to give children - belief in yourself. What a wonderful teacher.
