Obituary of Alice B. Hughes

Mrs. Alice B. Hughes, 102, formerly of Wall St., Amsterdam passed away on Friday at Montgomery Meadows in Amsterdam where she had been a resident. Born on February 11, 1903 in Amsterdam, NY she was the daughter of John and Frieda Goll Battenfeld. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended local schools. Mrs. Hughes was employed by Mohasco and Fownes Brothers in Amsterdam until her retirement in 1961. She was the oldest member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member of the Heralder?s Circle of the church. Mrs. Hughes was also a member of the Hi-Lo Seniors in Amsterdam. She was married to John Hughes on December 10, 1921. He passed away on February 2, 1973. Mrs. Hughes was also predeceased by her son, William Jack Hughes in 1984 and a grandson, Thomas Hughes in 2000. Survivors include a daughter in-law, Maurine Hughes of Randleman, NC; 3 grandchildren, Patricia Sealy of Asheboro, NC, Alan Hughes of Chantilly, VA and William Hughes of Browns Summit, NC; 6 great-grandchildren, Joshua Martin, Trisha Vaughn, Erin Hughes, Kelly Hughes, Meghan Hughes, and Moira Hughes; and one great-great-granddaughter, Kayli Vaughn. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. The burial will take place in the Hagaman Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Monday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
