Obituary of Carl Sidney Salmon

Atty. Carl S. Salmon, Jr., 84 years old, of Manzanita, Oregon, formerly of Amsterdam, died peacefully on July 2, 2005 with his loving family at his side. A life-long Amsterdam resident until recently, he was the son of Carl S. Salmon Sr. and Hortense Kaufman Salmon. Mr. Salmon attended the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a graduate of the Manlius Military School and then the Cornell Agricultural School in 1941. His studies at the Albany Law School of Union University were interrupted by his service in the Army Air Force during the Second World War, but he returned and earned his degree in 1946. Mr. Salmon was admitted to the bar on March 7, 1947, and practiced law with his father Carl Sr., until his death in 1952. That law practice continues today, run by his sons Jim and Del, under the name Salmon & Salmon, LLP. Mr. Salmon was well known for his community activism and philanthropy, acting as a founding member and serving on the board for more than 17 years of Fulton-Montgomery Community College. He was a member of the American Bar Association and member and past president of the Montgomery County Bar Association. Mr. Salmon was also a member of Post 401 of the Jewish War Veterans, and the Amsterdam Lodge No. 88 F. & A.M. He also served as chairman of the former Civil Service Commission and was a member of the Board of Directors of the former Farmers National Bank, which was later known as the State Bank of Albany, Norstar, and then Fleet Bank. Mr. Salmon also served for several years as the Village Attorney for Broadalbin, and on the ARC Board of Liberty Enterprises. He was of the Jewish faith and was a member of the Temple of Israel. Mr. Salmon and his wife Leila worked tirelessly together to better their community, with Carl playing a key role in the development of the real estate holding company that enabled Montgomery Transitional Services to occupy several properties that served individuals with mental illnesses. In 2001, the couple donated their historic home on Locust Ave. to the Liberty Foundation to help further the organization?s goals. On October 26, 1947, Mr. Salmon married Lois Ann Frankel, who died September 6, 1973. He married Leila Kirshen Newhouse on April 20, 1975, who survives. Mr. Salmon also leaves behind five sons, James F. Salmon and his wife, Nancy, of Saratoga; Carl S. Salmon III and his wife, Michelle, of Milledgeville, Georgia; Del B. Salmon and his wife, Randie, of Amsterdam; John K. Salmon and his wife, Debbie, of Montauk, Long Island; and David J. Newhouse of Portland, Oregon. He also leaves behind his daughters Rosalyn Newhouse, Jo Newhouse, Mimi Newhouse, and Wendy Davis and her husband, Dwight, all of Portland, Oregon, as well as 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1PM, Wednesday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with The Rabbi Matthew Cutler, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Temple of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Foundation for Fulton Montgomery Community College or the Rinehart Clinic Endowment Fund in Wheeler, Oregon in care of the funeral home. The period of mourning will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday until 3PM at the home of Del and Randie Salmon at 80 Pheasant Ridge, Niskayuna, with a Shiva service on Wednesday at 7PM.
