Obituary of Gwendolyn E. Whitney
Gwendolyn E. Whitney, 92 of Henrietta Blvd., passed away Saturday evening at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility after a brief illness with her family at her side.
Born in Amsterdam on Feb. 8, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Miller Smith. Educated locally, she entered the US Army and served as a WAC during World War II in Hot Springs Arkansas. A home maker, Gwendolyn loved to knit and generously shared her special talent as a teacher and supplier of hand made knitted goods to family and friends. She was a devoted member of the First Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School at one time.
She was devoted to her family and was an avid gardener along with her husband.
She and Claude shared nearly sixty six years of marriage until his death on May 28, 2000.
Her loving family includes her daughter Diane and her husband Robert Mongin of Amsterdam; her son Donald and his wife Cadi Whitney of Michigan; grandchildren Jonathan and his wife Sharon Mongin, Timothy and Jennifer Mongin; a sister, Marion MacKillop of Rochester as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gwendolyn was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first great grandchild later this year.
Services are Tuesday at 1:00 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family
Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. Charles Hesslink officiating. Interment is in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are today Monday from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in her name to the Foundation Of Amsterdam Memorial Hospital in care of the funeral home.
