Obituary of Gary D. Ashe
Gary D. Ashe, 68, of Gloversville passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a long illness.
He was born on Good Friday April 7, 1939 to the late John J. Ashe and Evelyn Elmendorf. He graduated from Gloversville High School in 1957. While still in school he joined the local National Guard unit out of Fort Drum. He became interested in ham radio as a teenager and got his license to be an amateur radio operator with the call letters K2RKW. In 1973, he and his best friend Otto Boerner III co-founded the Tryon Amateur Radio Club. Gary served as President for 34 years. He was proud to be a member of the ARRL for over 50 years. He was a former member of the Pine Tree Rifle Club. He held the position of Fulton County Coordinator of 911 and was a member of Sky Warn. He was also a member of the Independent Telephone Pioneer?s Association Alpha Rayne Chapter for 47 years.
Gary went to work for General Telephone Company in 1960, starting out in the telephone repair shop. He retired in 1995 from GTE as an Engineering Manager. He also recorded statistics for the National Weather Bureau for several years.
Of his many interests, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood-working, spending time with his friends at the Nichol Vly Camp and summers at his family camp on Mayfield Lake. Gary was an avid Adirondack enthusiast. He had much love for his family and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors are: his wife Joyce Berner whom he married in 1962 and their three children, Deborah Ashe, Jeffrey Ashe Stacy and Lissa Talmadge Daniel, 5 grandchildren, Erin, Eliza, Andy and Libby Ashe and Lauren Henry; his sister Janice Hanifin Daniel and his brother James Ashe Michelle all of Gloversville; two step-brothers, Brent Bohne Barbara and Brian Bohne Judy and their families; aunts, uncles, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 3 to 7 pm Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday with the Rev. Wayne E. Jones Sr. officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Tryon Amateur Radio Club, c/o Otto Boerner III, 230 Old State Rd., Johnstown, NY 12095 or to the Nichol Vly Camp, c/o Robert Lanphere, 6 Gillen Terrace, Gloversville, NY 12078.
