Obituary of Martin C. Jones

Mr. Martin C. "Poppy" Jones, III died Monday morning, September 1, 2008 at his home in Johnstown. He lived in Gloversville for most of his life, also residing in Florida for eight years before settling in Johnstown two years ago. He was born in Gloversville on October 16, 1951. He served in the Navy from September of 1969 to August of 1970. Marty was employed by various leather finishers in the area including Townsend Leather of Johnstown, where he worked until his disablity. "Poppy" loved his grandchildren and enjoyed telling stories to them. They always believed his stories, no matter what he said to them. He also loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He is survived by three children, Martin C. Jones, IV Vera Johnson of Johnstown, Melissa A. Walker Calvin E. of Gloversville and Kristy L. Hollister Philip Sr. of Gloversville; a brother, Mark Jones of Florida; a sister, Mary Batease George of Gloversville; 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin, II and Marion Dean Jones. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 am to 1 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
