Obituary of John A. Jacobs

John A. Jacobs, Jr. 84, of Kingsway Manor, Schenectady, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2017. He was a resident on Thayer Road in the Town of Florida for 56 years until moving to Kingsway Manor 2 years ago. Born July 3, 1932 in Amsterdam, NY he was the son of the late John A. and Mary Furman Jacobs. He was raised in Fort Johnson and Amsterdam. He attended schools in Fort Johnson and Amsterdam. John graduated from Amsterdam Industrial High School. After graduation, he worked at Mohawk Carpet Mills for a short time and then went to work for General Electric. He joined the Marine Corps in April 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He was sent to Korea after training and was declared missing in action April 1952. He had been wounded and captured on Hill 159 near Panmunjom. He was held prisoner until August 27, 1953 when the peace talks were signed. John was discharged as a Sergeant on April 27, 1954. In June of 1954, John returned to his job at General Electric where he worked for 36 years retiring December of 1988 from Quality Control. He then worked for seven years as a school bus driver for Paul Heznek fully retiring in 1995 at the age of 63. In 1962, John married the former Dorothy Masten. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter, Laurie (David) Gordon of Natick, MA; his son, John A. (Heather) Jacobs, III of Fonda; two brothers, George Jacobs of Harrisburg, NC and Benedict Jacobs of Fonda; three sisters, Mary Crowley of Rialto, CA, Theresa Cummings of West Covina, CA and Catherine McNamara of Tribes Hill; six grandchildren, J.D., Kaitlyn, Nicholas, Amy, Matthew and Michael; several nieces nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his brother, Francis Jacobs. John was a lifetime member of the following organizations: Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 118, American Ex-Prisoners of War Association, Korean War Veterans Association Troy Chapter, Disabled American Veterans Amsterdam Chapter 100, Veterans of Foreign War Amsterdam Post 55, and the American Legion Amsterdam Post 701. He also belonged to the Marine Corps League Amsterdam, 40 and 8 Amsterdam Local 814 and the Polish American Veterans Amsterdam. John loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren that her loved so much. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, 52 Cornell Street, Amsterdam with the Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis as celebrant. Private burial with Military honors will take place on Friday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the church.
