Obituary of Edward Scharpou
Edward Scharpou, 74, passed away peacefully after a long, courageous battle with a long term illness, Thursday, February 26, 2009. Ed was born on September 5, 1935, the son of the late Edward and Frances Fisher Scharpou in Chicago, IL. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He worked as a welder for GE in Schenectady for twenty five years. Together with his wife Irene, owned the Arietta Hotel for thirty two years.
He was a member of the Johnstown Moose and also a lifetime member of the NRA. Ed enjoyed roller-skating, snowmobiling, playing chess, darts and pool, swimming, hunting, fly fishing, baseball, tooling leather and the Adirondacks. Most of all, he loved being with his family and especially spending time with his uncle by the lake. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Irene Pretty Scharpou of Arietta. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children: Linda Dolan of Ephratah, Deb Hutchinson Tim of Johnstown, Ed Scharpou, Jr. Tessa of Salisbury, Terry Scharpou of Dolgeville and Lucinda Ormiston of Johnstown; eleven grandchildren: Angelina, Anthony, Kati, Edward, Cassandra, Jessica, Jamie, Alicia, T.J., Laura and David; five great grandchildren: Jaqueline, Abigail, Celine, Jazzelyn and R.J.; one sister, Linda VanValkenburgh of St. Johnsville; a brother in law, Leonard Pretty of Newfoundland, three sisters in law: Ann Newhook, Frances Howell and Linda Newhook- all of Newfoundland. In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by an infant sister, Jaqueline; a brother in law, Lawrence Pretty and a sister in law, Evelyn Collon.
Friends and family are invited and may call Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville from 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. with the Reverend Earl S. Johnson, Jr. presiding. Cremation will take place at Park View Crematorium in Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's memory to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osbourne Rd.
