Obituary of Edward W. Schmidtmann

Edward W. Schmidtmann, 85, of Snooks Corners Road, Town of Florida, passed away Friday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility after a brief illness. Born in Amsterdam on October 23, 1923, he was the son of Ernest and Wilhelmina Wilkins Schmidtmann. He worked for the Mohawk Carpet Mills for a number of years until they closed in 1985. He also had been employed by GLF Company, now known as Agway. During World War II, he proudly served with the US Navy aboard the USS Wisconsin. He was a life member of the VFW Post 55 and the USS Wisconsin Association. Ed was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America for over sixty-five years. He was also active at the United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and was on its session. He was a member of the Amsterdam Lodge # 84, F & AM. Ed and his wife were longtime members of the local Square-dance group where they both enjoyed traveling. On December 15, 1945, he was united in marriage to the former Ruth J. Saltsman. His beloved wife predeceased him on March 16, 2008. Ed leaves his son, Larry and his wife Nancy Schmidtmann of Norfolk, VA; grandsons, Eddie, Scott and David Schmidtmann as well as a great grandson, Hunter. Cousins also survive. In addition to his wife, Ed was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Schmidtmann and a brother, Ernest. A service to celebrate his life will take place Tuesday at 10:00 am at the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street with the Rev. Roland J. "Mac" McDonald officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in Fairview Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday from 5-7 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. Members of Amsterdam Lodge 84 F&AM will meet at 6 pm Monday to pay their respects to their brother Ed. Contributions may be made in his memory to the United Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home office.
