Obituary of Percy Baird

Percy Baird, 77, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009. He was born September 13, 1931 in Gloversville, the son of the late Percy and Florence Hayes Baird, Sr. Percy served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He worked for over thirty years at various schools until his retirement in 1996 as head custodian of Gloversville High School. Mr. Baird married his sweetheart, Alta M. Elmendorf on March 27, 1955. She predeceased him on May 30, 2006. Percy had a sweet disposition and loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. He was an excellent cook and baker. Most of all, Percy adored his grandchildren and his late wife. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by a daughter, Sherrie Yeates Doug of Chesapeake, VA; a son-in-law, Robert G. Brooks Joann of Mayfield, three grandchildren: Nicole, Ryan and Christian Yeates; a brother, Larry Baird Carole of Baldwinsville, NY; three brothers-in-law: Michael Elmendorf Judy of Meco, Patrick Elmendorf of Perth and Stanley Batchum and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, Mr. Baird was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Brooks and a sister, Carolyn Batchum. A funeral service will be held Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville with the Reverend Dr. R.W. Williams presiding. There will be one hour of visitation from 12 to 1 p.m. Interment will be at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown with military honors.
