Obituary of Vera C. McGovern
Vera Carswell McGovern, 88, of Tryon Avenue, Glenville, passed away peacefully Sunday evening at Ellis Hospital.
Born in Mechanicville on March 7, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John and Irene Hall Carswell. She was a 1939 graduate of Mechanicville High School and later the Mildred Elley Business School.
Vera was first employed by Mintzer Petroleum and later for Weber Construction Company of Schenectady where she retired in 1981 as executive secretary. She had been a fifty year resident of Schenectady. Vera remained active, traveling internationally and enjoying her winters in Palm Beach County, Florida. She was a member of the Loyal Order Of The Moose in Florida, and the auxiliary of the Eagles Aerie 3610 in Schenectady. An avid reader, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and keeping up with current events and was of the Roman Catholic faith. Vera was a strong role model, fun, energetic and loved her family most of all. Her insight and views were much appreciated by both her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of many friends over the course of her life.
On May 16, 1948, she was united in marriage to Joseph P. McGovern. Her beloved husband passed away on March 20, 1991.
Her loving family includes her children; Patrick J. and his wife Maureen McGovern of Schenectady, Joseph T. and his wife Diane McGovern of Burnt Hills, and Nancy Stepina-Robison and her husband J. Jeffrey Robison of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren; Keith Kara McGovern, Brandon Shannon McGovern, Ryan and Heather McGovern , Gregory and Patrick Stepina; step grandchildren; Rebecca Robison Gavin, Matthew Robison and Katie Brokesh Dave; great grandchildren; Kassia and Alexia McGovern and Lucas Filardi; as well as nieces and nephews. The McGovern family would like to thank the Ellis Hospital B-6 staff for their kindness and wonderful care of Vera during her last illness.
In addition to her parents and husband, Vera was predeceased by her siblings Everett J. Carswell, Gladys Newton and Bernice Cenci.
Services are Friday at 9:00 am at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, followed by the Mass Of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10:00 am at the Church Of Our Lady Of Grace, 73 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, Fr. Jack Hunter, celebrant. Interment is in Memory's Garden, Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 4-7 pm at the Glenville Funeral Home. Contributions may be made in Vera's name to the Ellis Hospital Foundation, the Wesley Foundation or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, all in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam N Y, 12010. Her family has entrusted her arrangements to their care.
