Obituary of John M. Steiger

John M. Steiger, Sr., 74, of Hughes Road, died peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2009 following a short illness. Born on July 21, 1935 in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Eugene and Edith Smith Steiger. John worked on his family farm for many years. He then worked for General Electric Company in Schenectady before going to work for the Cushing Stone Company as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. John was also a veteran who served from 1958 to 1961 with the United States Army. He enjoyed mentoring his family and friends on all life skills. John also enjoyed his back yard wildlife, feeding and caring for the nature in his own yard. On February 14, 1958 he was united in marriage to Carolyn J. Steiger. The union lasted nearly forty years, until her passing on August 26, 1997. Survivors include his daughter, Judi M. Steiger of Sprakers; two sons, John Sook Steiger, Jr. of Amsterdam and Jacob Renee Broadwell Steiger of Fort Hunter; two grandchildren, Morgan June Steiger and Colt Brian Steiger; two sisters, Mary James Sheridan of Amsterdam and Amelia Auggie Greco of Amsterdam; two brothers, Henry Betty Steiger of Amsterdam and Reinhard Patricia Steiger of Amsterdam; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Edith Daye and his brother Robert Steiger. A Service of Remembrance will take place on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 2 o'clock at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. A calling hour will precede the service beginning at 1 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Seventh Day Adventist Church, 397 Division Street Amsterdam, NY 12010.
