Obituary of Arlene E. Coons
Mrs. Arlene E. Coons passed away on September 22, 2009 at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home in Gloversville, NY with her family at her side. She was 90 years old.
She was born on April 26, 1919 in the town of Depew, NY, the daughter of the late Eugene and Emma Flor Quiram. Arlene graduated as a registered nurse from Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in 1941. She married Walter Coons of Johnstown, NY on the night before the Pearl Harbor attacks, and they enjoyed 63 years of marriage. They built the White Holland House restaurant in 1948 and White Holland Golf course in 1964 and ran both until their retirement in 1979. Anyone who worked at the "Turkey Farm" will remember Arlene's work ethic. Working tirelessly in the summer, she and Walter enjoyed their winter home in Cape Coral, Florida where they golfed almost daily and Arlene got in touch with her artistic side and discovered her love of painting.
Arlene was a charter member of Soroptimist of Fulton County since 1953 as well as the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, in 2004, as well as her brothers, Eugene, James and Richard Quiram, and a great-grandson, Cameron James Livesey.
Arlene is survived by three daughters: Barbara Noble of Schenectady, Judith Mihal Steve of Ephratah and Michele A. Rose James of Broadalbin; seven grandchildren: Michael and Marc Livesey of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Lisa Livesey of Gloversville, Lori Stearns Daniel of Johnstown, Veronica Swart James of Johnstown, Ronald Veresko Stephanie of Burnt Hills, and Alexandra Goossen of Broadalbin; and twelve great-grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 25 at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St; Broadalbin, NY. A Requiem Mass will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 N. Market St; Johnstown, NY. The Rev. William D. Small will officiate. Interment will take place at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, 99 E. State St; Gloversville, NY 12078.
