Obituary of Melvin Shannon
Melvin Shannon Sr., age 85, of Gloversville passed away on Sunday February 28, 2010 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Glen, NY on July 10, 1924 the son of the late Abram and Jessie Smith Shannon.
On March 17, 1946, Melvin married the former Pearl Wilson and they shared over 63 years united in marriage.
Melvin worked for Bruce Miller Trucking for many years. He loved his job and always said that he wished everyday could be a Monday.
Over the years Melvin enjoyed vacationing in Maine, singing and listening to classic country music and repairing bicycles. Other hobbies that Melvin had were watching wrestling with his daughter carol, swinging on his swing in the back yard and watching New York Mets baseball, " Lets go Mets". But most of all Melvin enjoyed the family cookouts and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, Melvin is survived by 8 children: Melvin Shannon Jr. of Gloversville, Carol Danforth of Gloversville, Nancy Bovee Doc of Gloversville, Barbara Gardner of Hudson Falls, Sharon Young Eugene of Gloversville, Janet Piper Paul of Amsterdam, Sheila Fetrow Edward of Johnstown and Patricia Myers Fred of Gloversville.
Additional survivors include 26 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a brother: Abe Shannon and a sister; Rose Christman.
Friends and relatives are invited and may call from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home; 51 Fremont Street; Gloversville. A funeral service will be conducted immediately following the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. R. W. Williams officiating.
