Obituary of Mary M. Lewis
Miss Mary M. Lewis, age 67 of Gloversville, died Tuesday morning, April 27, 2010 at her home.
She was born February 25, 1943 in Glens Falls, the daughter of the late William and Mary Lyons Lewis. A 1961 graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls, she then received her bachelors degree at Albany State College. She was a Latin teacher her entire career at Gloversville High School from 1966 to 1993 when she retired. During that time she was also the Scitamard Director for many years. Following her retirement she worked for two years at Johnstown High School.
Mary was well-known for her personality. Her generosity and kindness stood out as she touched many lives. She was serving as President of the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society at the time of her death. She had served on the board of the Jewish Community Center in Gloversville where she was active as director of plays for ten years until recently.
She loved to travel and enjoyed her time spent at her Pine Lake camp for the past three summers. She was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan and was of Catholic faith.
Mary was devoted to her surviving sister, Sheila A. Lewis of Gloversville. She was a loving aunt to her niece, Erinn Eschler of Mayfield, and had an immeasurable love for her grandnephew, Maxfield Insogna of Mayfield. Mary will be dearly missed by her family and friends, especially by her rescued dog, Susan.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Church, 205 Glebe St; Johnstown. The Rev. Kenneth Swain will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery, South Glens Falls. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, NY 12078.
