I am so grateful for Mary Lewis. She was a friend and a mentor. Even after 20-plus years, I know with certainty that any sense of belonging I had in high school was due to her. Four years of Latin classes and four years of play practices with Mary: it was joyful! Others had sports and clubs, I had theatre and Mary. It made a difference in my life. And I know I'm just one of many. Bravo, Mary, bravo!

I am very happy that Mary decided to come out of 'retirement' and teach at JHS for two years. My daughter Anna enjoyed her classes with her immensely. In fact, Anna, was just going to call her when she found out about her passing.
She was a wonderful teacher and person and we will miss her. We are proud that we got to know her.

I also was a student of Miss Lewis's GHS '80. I have excellent memories of her class and several Latin based factoids that I still use to impress the unwarymy kids mostly. I remember Mary as a teacher who allowed kids to be themselves and if you had a good joke or story she wanted to hear it. Over the last five years we were reacquainted and she would come into my store to shop and "catch up". She spoke so fondly and with such pride over that little guy, Max. To her family and close friends, my condolences. I will miss her too.

I wish to pass along my condolences in any way possible. Mary was an inspiring teacher and a good friend. She challenged me and supported me. People with her intellect and wit are rarely as full of life as she was. And it is actually because of her that I can not attend the services this afternoon or tomorrow morning. After my years on the Gloversville High School stage, I pursued acting and am performing this evening in an Off-Broadway production in New York City. I loved her greatly and will miss her terribly. If you could please pass this along to Mary's family, I would appreciate it.

In the 60s, Mary was my teacher. Her ability to combine academics with worldly insight, humor, and friendship was amazing for a teacher at that time. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say she helped me with decisions and direction in my life.
I also knew Mary for more than 30 years as an esteemed colleague. This time I saw Mary's dedication, insight, and humor from a different perspective.
Later on, Mary was a Latin teacher and friend to my children Laura and Jim.
Over the years, Mary touched so many lives in different ways.

Mary Lewis was so much more than a teacher. She genuinely cared for the people of the school and the community she served, devoting her life unceasingly to the betterment of it all. I can't adequately articulate how much I believe her loss will resonate. I recall being an insecure teenager from the West End of Gloversville, but Ms. Lewis always looked past what others only superficially acknowledged and, instead, selflessly invested her time and attention to help shape my future. Through Mary, I learned to value my education. I learned to cherish my friends. I learned to love life. I learned a deep respect for language. And every day that passes sprouts a blossom of character from some seed that Ms. Lewis planted there many years ago. The world will see only one Mary Margaret Lewis. She was truly one of a kind. She was the real deal. I will miss her dearly.

I was lucky enough to have Miss Lewis as a private tutor. We spent many afternoons together, laughing and also learning! She gave me so much confidence and knowledge that in six weeks she helped me raise my regents score over thirty points. She was a wonderful woman and no matter where or when I would see her she always made me laugh.

Miss Lewis was my Latin teacher in h.s. I graduated in 1973. My friends thought I was "nuts" to take such a hard boring language, but with Miss Lewis, it was anything but. Latin was my favorite class, especially on Firdays. Every Friday we had "culture" day. The desks got pushed back, the chairs put in a circle, and we talked about anything and everything. She was so cool, and really listened to us. She never put anyone down, or turned away if we needed help, no matter what the problem. I will always remember her lovingly. Kathy Anderson Austin class of '73.

Miss Lewis was always my favorite teacher. She gave me insight during those awkward teenage years and helped me through my mothers death. She was truly the most unique, honest, caring and encouraging teacher in GHS. I will never forget this amazing woman.

Not many teachers can touch our lives the way she did. Nearly 12 years after hs I still remember much of the advise she gave me. She was one of the few who believed in those of us that didn't even believe in ourselves. She let us be kids and did not judge but gave us honesty and truth.

I was privileged to have had Ms. Mary Lewis as a teacher and as a director. She was a fabulous person with a great sense for honesty and living her life to the fullest. We all enjoyed watching her sit and give directions to her actors on stage as the crew of which she got me interested in being a part of sat and waited until we got to go and do things that created magic on the GHS stage. It was an honor to have known her and been a part of Mary's life. It was a great privilege to know that she influenced myself and so many others into leading a life fuller and a road less travelled. We all learned to give back and to do what many said couldn't be done from our beloved Latin teacher and musical director. We will miss you, Mary Lewis.
