Obituary of Carmeta Sophie Stahler

On Monday, April 24, 2017, Carmeta Sophie Stahler, 98, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 17, 1919 to parents Joseph and Sophie Labunski. She was a lifelong resident of Fort Plain, where she was born, raised, educated and married. She was employed as a payroll secretary for 66 years at Luxuray, which later became Johnstown Knit. On September 4, 1942, Carmeta married her loving husband, Leland Stahler, whom passed away in 1961. Carmeta had numerous hobbies, including, reading, upholstering, sewing, knitting, playing bridge and putting together puzzles. She was an avid golfer, tennis player, polka dancer, bowler, swimmer and basketball player in her younger days. To her credit, she once got a hole-in-one in golf and swam the entirety of Caroga Lake. In her later years she could be found tending her lawn, baking for her grandkids and watching the Yankees. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend; she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind her son, Gary and his wife Marie Stahler of Canajoharie; beloved grandchildren, Payton Stahler of Miami and Mackenzie Stahler of Canajoharie; special niece Lorraine O'Conner of Chestertown; along with several nieces and nephews. Carmeta was predeceased by her sisters, Ida Miller and Josephine Osley; her brother, Chester Labunski. Calling hours to which relatives and friends are invited will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 4pm until 7pm at Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 11am at Our Lady of Hope, 115 Reid Street, Fort Plain, 1339. Burial will follow at Fort Plain Cemetery.
