Obituary of Dorothy A. Weiderman

Dorothy Agnes Weiderman, 95, of 57 North Main Street, Broadalbin went to be with her Lord on Friday November 5, 2010 at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam where she resided. Born on December 16, 1914 in Broadalbin, she was the daughter and one of 14 children of the late William and Kate Coloney Weiderman. Dorothy was a lifelong resident and a 1932 graduate of Broadalbin High School. She hoped to become a nurse, but instead she attended business school. While attending school she worked doing child care and house-work. After graduating from Business School Dorothy worked as a secretary taking dictation for a company in Johnstown. She returned to Broadalbin in 1944 to work making sweaters for the war as a "Maker" factory worker at the Broadalbin Knitting Mill and Continental Mill. She continued working for St. Thomas' Leather Goods in Gloversville and then for Mohawk Furniture Co. in Broadalbin before retiring in 1978. After retiring she volunteered as a school bus monitor for handicap children. Dorothy was a long outstanding member of the Broadalbin United Methodist Church for over 75 years and was involved in many activities which started with teaching some of the Churches first new member classes. She also was a Sunday School teacher, Involved with the Youth Fellowship MYF from 1944 to 1990 and a member of the UMW from 1943 to 1973. In the past several years you could find her around the church cleaning or straightening up after each Sunday worship service. During the week she could be found in the food pantry checking in with friends. At the annual Church fair for many years she was very active in the plant booth smiling and greeting everyone that stopped by. Dorothy was very well known in the community and she spent her life in service to the Lord by helping family, friends, neighbors and strangers alike. She would visit shut-ins and drive many of them to get groceries or take them for medical appointments. If she knew of a need, she was compelled by love to try and meet that need. Truly Heaven's gain is our loss and she will be deeply missed. For many years she lived on Mill Street in Broadalbin with the late Helen Seeley and Helen Bates. From a family of 14 children Dorothy is predeceased by her sisters Edith McLouth, Ethel Graham, Hazel Tomlinson, Bernice Uhlinger, Thelma Alley and Barbara Weiderman and brothers Howard, Robert and Floyd Weiderman. She is survived by two brothers; Arthur Weiderman of Broadalbin and Lester Weiderman of Pottersville and two sisters; Helen Farsdahl of Spanaway, Wa. and Clara Steffek of Amsterdam, as well many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Friday, November 12, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 West Main Street in Broadalbin. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 at the Broadalbin United Methodist Church, 65 North Main Street, Broadalbin, followed by a Burial service at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin.
