Richard & Clair,
Sorry to hear of your mother's death. I just ran across this while looking for someone else.
I always thought she was kind of neat for putting up with my crap during my many after school visits with Rich. Even though I would sometimes get the feeling that "maybe I should leave", she always invited me to stay.
I know that my mother was inspired to be more than she thought she could be, by becomming a friend of your Mom.
Her assistance with my mother's Daughter's application, and the many stories of our parents at Edinburg will always be remembered.
Take care.

Dear Claire, I am so sorry for your loss. I think your mom was one classy lady and a great inspiration to you and any woman who knew her. She was the leader of the women among whom I would find my way. She was always gracious and had an answer for everything. She will be missed by you as well as so many others who she crossed paths with. I send my love and my sypathathies. Peggy

To the family of Mrs. Lathers - she was indeed such a wonderful person and teacher. Not being inclined toward her subject, she patiently left quite a positive impression. Years later, I still remember our discussions as she helped me understand what she loved so much. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Clair, Dick and family,
Please accept my condolences. I still remember what nice folks your parents were, especially how they let us kids in the neighborhood ride our sleds down the big hill in your backyard after each snowstorm.

My sister and I were only last week remembering one of our favorite teachers. It was her example that gave both of us a model to follow when we began our careers in teaching. She was smart, funny, kind and always full of suprises. As I get ready to retire this year, I can only hope that I was half the teacher that Carol was.

My sympathy to the family. I knew Mrs Lather's as Claire's mom and met her on several occasions when we were in graduate school in Buffalo New York. I spent a wonderful time at their summer place and had a badly needed time off on the lake by their house. Mrs. L was so gracious, even when I left a wet towel in the wrong place. Sorry Mrs Lathers!!! I saw her again many years latter when I visited Claire in Washington DC after some work at the NIH. She was a little slowed but still fine and she remembered me.. that towel made an impression. Mrs. Lathers had a full and wonderful life, and she spent her last time with Claire, whom I have always thought of being the world's best daughter.

In 1972, Mrs. Lathers was my "big sister" more like a second mom and mentor during my first year of teaching in Canajoharie. She was always so charming, sweet and kind and shared many of her pearls of wisdom with me. I shall never forget her. Thank you, Carol, for your inspiration and friendship! May God bless you with eternal peace. My sympathy to the Lathers family.

As a caregiver working 5 years for Carol was wonderful. I am going to miss coming to the house and seeing the sparkel in her eyes. First thing in the morning and hearing her say "home" and everyone would know what that meant Edinburg. She loved her home and was a wonder person to show me her hospitality. I will always miss her and everything that we did and shared together. I will always keep her in my heart. Peace be with her and her family.

I began teaching in Canajoharie in the fall of 1964. Coming from Montréal, my English was not too good. Mrs. Lathers, as I call her at the time, help me improving my English. She gave me several books to read and corrected essays I wrote on those books.
In time, I discover that she had other responsibilities than teaching English. One of them was advisor to the Debate Club. Many Saturdays, I went with her and a group of student to debate tournaments in Albany.
During the ten years we work together, I greatly benefitted from her love of literature and her professionalism as a teacher.

To Claire, Richard, and the entire Lathers family:
I have fond recollections of your mother since Claire and I first met in the parking lot of Albany College of Pharmacy in 1964. She was a gracious lady, a terrific cook, and possessed a great sense of humor. I always marveled at her ability to cook anything your father brought home from his hunting exploits. I remember how we were certain to label the TV dinners she prepared for you in college, so I did not accidentally end up with bear meat instead of hamburger for dinner!
Richard, over the past year, I have started to ride/drive a motorcycle trike, and can fully understand the freedom you enjoy on your motorcycle. Be safe and keep the sunny side up!
You were all fortunate that you were able to have your Mom with you for so long.
Larry and I send along our deepest sympathy.

My Aunt Carol was a very sweet person who will be extremely missed by her family, friends and all those whose lives she bettered as a teacher, counseler, friend, mother, aunt, grandmother, etc. Although we lived fairly far away, our father made a point of taking us to upstate NY at least once a year, usually in August when the lake temp would be bearable! We have great memories of those visits with our grandmother, Aunt Carol and Unle Sky and the extended family. Aunt Carol was always there to listen, help, dig in and get dirty, do crazy things and make our visits great fun. Meals were incredible!! Clearly the best cook I've known!! We will dearly miss her, but be eased by the knowledge she is now with both her baby brothers in Heaven!
Rest in peace.

My Dear Mrs. Lathers,
A lifetime ago I sat in your English class and listened intently as you passionately explained your love of poetry. You were not only my teacher but also a great listener at a time when my life was so very difficult. I have never forgotten your kindness or your gentle manner. Thank you.
May God be with you and may you rest in His peace.

When I stepped off of that bus in early August of 1968 and was greeted by a comforting smile and hello that was the beginning of a life long friendship with all of the Lathers family. Taking me in for 2 weeks every summer was the the best part of my formative years.Taking me places, meeting the wonderful people of their world, and treating me like I belonged there were the gifts that Carole and Schuyler gave me. I am who I am today due in no small part to their influence. Rest in Peace Aunt Carole and in the words of Margaret Thatcher "well done life long friend."

In reflecting on Aunt Carol today I realized what a big part of my childhood she was - specifically my summer vacations.
Every summer dad would pack us up to go visit his family in NY. We stopped complaining once we realized that the long drive would be rewarded with a week or 2 of Carol's devotion to our entertainment, education and nourishment!
Breakfast was followed by a swim in the lake, a hike, a visit to Saratoga or Ft Ticonderoga and usually the day's activities were followed by a big home cooked meal.
Carol was a 2nd mother to my sister and I in those early years. I always felt at home there and longed to return each summer. What a great time it was!
Thank you for the memories Aunt Carol, they are all fond. Farewell!

Carol was my colleague and my wife's former English teacher. She was the consummate professional who I dearly remember in my rookie year as a teacher. Thorough, demanding, patient, charming, but real in every sense. Our regrets to the family and friends. She will be missed and remembered.

Family of Mrs. Lathers,
Mrs. Lathers was my English teacher for a few years during the 1970's at Canajoharie High. She made reading literature enjoyable and provided an excellent example of what makes a good teacher. Though I have taught chemistry and physics for over 30 years I still employ many of Mrs. Lather's insructional techniques. Her work as a wonderful teacher continues to live.
With Sympathy,
Lesia Prime Thaisz
