Obituary of Eugene W. Hoose

Mr. Eugene W. Hoose, age 88, of West Perth, NY, died early Tuesday morning, January 4, 2011 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, with his family at his side. He was born May 28, 1922 in Johnstown, the son of the late Eugene Hoose and Grace Wells Hoose. A graduate of Gloversville High School, Gene enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 2, 1942 and later served during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He participated in action against the enemy at Tarawa in November of 1943 where he was wounded and later awarded the Purple Heart. Following the war Gene was a self-employed paint and wallpaper salesman and also worked as a firefighter for seven years for the Gloversville Fire Department. He later became a salesman for the Utica Paint Company where he retired from in 1985. Gene was a member of the Mayfield United Methodist Church, the Marine Corps League Adirondack Detachment #787, Fulton County D.A.V. Chapter #122, Mayfield Service Men's Club, V.F.W. Post #2077 of Gloversville, Johnstown Moose Lodge #1185 and the former Ancient Order of Foresters, Gloversville. His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening and square dancing. Mr. Hoose was married on April 16, 1946 to Marguerite Querbes who died September 10, 1992. He is survived by his wife, Shirley E. Ort Ernst-Hoose, whom he married on April 25, 1997 and resides in West Perth. Also surviving are: five children, Jo-Ann Hoose of Gloversville, John P. Hoose Janet of Gloversville, Thomas G. Hoose Karen of Mayfield, Richard W. Hoose Carol of Gloversville and Frank P. Hoose Naya of Mayfield; a step daughter, Bonita Ernst of Oceano, CA; six grandchildren, Amanda Nellis, Jason Hoose, Todd Hoose, Katie Streeter, Julianne Brownand Jeanette Brown; eight great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his sister, Grace Bice. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Mayfield United Methodist Church, 21 N. Main St; Mayfield. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield.
