Obituary of Betty E. Green

Mrs. Betty E. Green, age 84, of Gloversville, passed away Thursday, February 03, 2011 with her family and friends at her side at Mountain Valley Hospice, where she was lovingly cared for the past three weeks. She was born October 11, 1926 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Thomas and Katherine Wilmer Johnston. Betty graduated from Gloversville High School in 1944 and in 1948 from the Oneonta Normal School. She was employed as a teacher for a total of 34 years in the Johnstown School District, first in the Montgomery Unit third grade for eight years, fourth grade for one year and at Knox Junior High for nine years where she taught a Math/English combination. She taught the first Pre-Algebra class to accelerated children in Junior High, as well as regent's courses. She served as chairman of the Math Department from 1972 - 1982. Following her retirement in 1982 she continued to substitute teach and tutor until 1990. Betty was a member of Foothills United Methodist Church where she was choir member, church pianist and member of the board of trustees. She was Past President and Secretary of the Columbia School P.T.A. in Gloversville. She was awarded a Life Membership in the Knox Junior High School P.T.A. Betty was a Johnstown Teacher's Association Retirement delegate for many years as well as Secretary and President. She was Past President of Gloversville Business and Professional Women and Fulton County Retired Teacher's Association, where she also served as Secretary. A Life Member of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association, she served as President and Secretary of the state zone and was Treasurer of the zone until December, 2010. She had also served as President and Secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary of Concordia Singing Society and President of the Ensemble Club of Fulton County. She was Director of Music at the Ida McGuiness Senior Citizen's Club and member of Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary. She was the Pianist for Nate's Notes at the tree lighting ceremonies at Nathan Littauer Hospital. She played the piano at Caroga Lake Chapel during the summer months. Betty was married November 25, 1948 to Burton Green who died in 1985. She is survived by: her daughter, Sandra A. Harrington Norman of Gloversville; her twin grandsons, Matthew F. Harrington and Michael E. Harrington Melinda and her great-grandson, Archer E. Harrington. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Johnston. The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 6 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Foothills United Methodist Church, 17 Fremont St; Gloversville, with the Rev. Cynthia J. VanAllen and the Rev. Terrence O'Neill officiating. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
