Obituary of Marieta E. Crane

Marieta E. Crane, 93, of Prospect Street passed away quietly on Monday, March 7, surrounded by her family. Marieta was born in Fultonville on July 28, 1917. She was the daughter of Mabel M. Hess and Charles H. Quackenbush and a graduate of the local high school. She was employed at the Fonda Glove Works during the latter years of World War II and Premier Gloves in Fultonville in the late 50?s. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dever J. Crane whom she married on June 12, 1937 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. She also was pre-deceased by an older sister Mary Alice Horning and a younger brother Robert. She leaves her son, John D. Crane and his wife Geraldine of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and her daughter, Christine E. Pullen and her husband Thomas of Fultonville. She also leaves four grand children and four great grand children as well as several nieces and nephews. She was elected as Town Clerk in 1965 for the Town of Glen retiring after thirty six years of consecutive service. Her friend and former supervisor, Gerald Keller, described her as a great public relations person for the town. The many gifts in her Town Clerk office were from people whom she has served over the years attesting to the type of job she has done as the town's public relations person. "That's the type of individual that she was and why she had such a friendly relationship with the people? Keller said. When talking with her, it wasn?t difficult to see why children gave her hand-drawn pictures of frogs, which she collected and why people gave her photographs of beloved family pets and hunting trophies. All of which decorated her office. With her ready wit, openness and mischievous eyes, she joked with residents and her deputy clerk, Roxanne Douglass, creating an atmosphere of fun in her office. Besides her collection of frogs and pictures, she had work-related quotes hanging in her office. One of her favorite was: "I can only please one person per day and today is NOT your day. Tomorrow doesn't look good either," she would smile and point to the sign. It was hard not to smile when you were with her. She worked out of her home for thirty one years until the office was move to the town hall. ?People knew where I lived? she would often say and if they needed a license or other business they knew they could come to my home any time and I would be there to help. People felt comfortable. They would come in, we would take care of business and then sit and visit for a while. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Auriesville Cemetery Association and the Fultonville VFW Auxiliary. ?Mothers Teach Us To Love, To See Beauty To Take Our Place In The World And To Bloom There? Funeral Services will be held on Thursday March 10, 2011 at 11:00A.M. at the Jackson and Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, NY 12072. Calling hours will be on Wednesday March 9, 2011 between 4:00 and 7:00pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at the family?s descretion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church c/o the funeral home office.
