Obituary of Humbert Salluzzo
Mr. Humbert Salluzzo age 94 of Gloversville, passed away Wednesday May 4, 2011. Born March 26, 1917, he was the son of the late Antonette Marie Caesta and Francesco Salluzzo. A lifelong resident of Gloversville, he attended Columbia grammar school and Gloversville High School, graduating from Niskayuna High School in 2001.
As he was known to many, "Bert" was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather whose passions were his family, work and Catholic War Veterans Post 642. He thrived on being with family and friends and took special delight in all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A true and devoted patriot, he proudly served his country in the Army Signal Corps from 1942 to September 28, 1945, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He participated in campaigns in each of the listed regions as a component of the advance forces during each campaign: North Africa-attached to the British Army under Field Marshal Montgomery, Sicily, Anzio, France and Germany.
Mr. Salluzzo was also devoted to his community and was a past president of the Gloversville Little League, a Scout Leader of Troop 8 at the former Mt. Carmel Church and Explorer Post 14, a past board member of the Gloversville Housing Authority, past president of Gloversville High School Booster Club and a founding member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 642 in 1946, serving as a past post commander. He also was an integral part of the formation and operation of the very successful bingo program of the Catholic War Veterans for 45 years.
Mr. Salluzzo was a former production manager of Perrella Gloves, Inc. both before and after the war until the 1980 sale to Superba Cravats of Los Angeles California. He became president of the company until its subsequent sale to Elmer Little & Sons of Johnstown N.Y. in 1985. He remained with the company until its sale to Lacresia Designs of New York City when he became self employed operating a glove manufacturing facility with Robert Perrella until retirement at age 90.
In addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Concetta Maria Lomanto Salluzzo of Gloversville, whom he married on Armistice Day November 11, 1945, he is survived by his children:Robert J. Salluzzo and his wife Mary Warner Salluzzo of Johnstown, N.Y., Ronald E. Salluzzo and his wife Mary Sharon Walsh Salluzzo of Pittsford, N.Y.and Dr. Richard F. Salluzzo and his wife Nancy Cooper Salluzzo of Cape Cod, MA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: William and Anne Salluzzo, Stephen and Mary Salluzzo, Chris and Cara Salluzzo Lajewski, Dr. Jennifer Salluzzo, Ronald and Jody Cooper Hayes and Jonathan and Karen Cooper Tolmach. Mr. Salluzzo leaves great grandchildren; Dillon and Shannon Salluzzo, Kirsten and Kyah Lajewski, Spencer and Parker Hayes and Cameron Tolmach. Survivors include his loving in laws, the Lomanto family and Rose Salluzzo of Rotterdam, N.Y. and Mrs. Roy Natalie DeRocco of Amsterdam New York. Many nieces and nephews, great nieces and, nephews and cousins also survive. He was pre-deceased by a brother Gaetano Tony Salluzzo in 1973, A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 am Saturday May 7, 2011 at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 149 S. Main St. Gloversville, N.Y. with Reverend Rendell Torres as celebrant.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4-7 pm at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville. Burial with Military Honors will take place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown, N.Y. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Mt. Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave. Gloversville, N.Y. 12078 or to Nathan Littauer Hospital Foundation, 99 E.
