Obituary of John Kobuskie

Mr. John "Jack" Kobuskie, age 87, of Gloversville, died Sunday morning, July 3, 2011 at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, Gloversville. He was born July 6, 1923 in Gloversville, the son of the late Joseph and Henrietta Walther Kobuskie. He served in the Army during World War II. He later attended SUNY Cortland where he was a record-setting athlete. He played golf and baseball and was captain of the basketball team in 1946-1947. He graduated from Cortland in 1948 and returned to Gloversville where he became Gloversville High School's basketball coach and took his team to a Foothills Council title in his first year. He later became Physical Education Curriculum Coordinator. He maintained a competitive team for his entire 30 years of coaching and attained 397 victories during that time. Known affectionately by many as "Uncle Jack" he was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and Pine Brook Golf Club. In 1974 Jack was inducted into the C-Club Hall of Fame at SUNY Cortland. He has received numerous awards from civic groups in Gloversville for his coaching and his work with young people. He was associated with the local Boy Scout Camp Fund Drive and was former chairman of the Gloversville March of Dimes. Jack was married on August 19, 1944 to Irene Marie McIntyre who died June 6, 1996. He is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his six sisters and brothers: Marguerite Hellwig, Marion Tomek, Ruth Robbins, Esther Pelcher, Leonard Kobuskie and Joseph Kobuskie. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 at Kobuskie - Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. L. David Almleaf officiating. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to St. James Lutheran Church, 521 N. Main St; Gloversville, NY 12078.
