Coach K was a terrific coach and an even better mentor to his players. Certainly myself, and probably many other former players will never forget the valuable lessons about life and athletics learned from him. A great man and great memories.
Thanks, Coach K, you are missed.

A few days ago, I made an effort to share one more laugh with Jack. We were teammates at Cortland. I wanted to ask him how come our basketball coach didn't get us cars and cash and gorgeous cheer leaders like all the other coaches seem to do.
Needless to say, I was devastated when my search revealed that he had recently passed away. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. We have lost one of the best.
Not only was Jack a fine basketball player but he was one of the most graceful athletes that I have seen. His performance on the court was effortless. It's almost as if the game of basketball was choreographed just for him.
I also served as the JV coach at Gloversville for one year and benefitted from the coaching skills that he passed on to me as I began my coaching career.
We shared many laughs and stories during our times together. I am grateful for everything that he has added to my life.

Occasionally, a person comes along who sees in each of us the strengths, the potential, the good, and tries in every reasonable way to bring us to that vision. As a coach, Jack got me to see several key things in myself that I would never have been able to do on my own. His style wasn’t based in complex sports psychology; who even knew of such things back then! It was passed along to his students through his person, his system of beliefs, especially in the individual. We were his children, and he was far more than our basketball Coach.
Back then I knew he took great pleasure in the process. I could see it in his face. And I know he understood its meaning and effect on me. Even if I never once told him.
Thank you Coach.

I see some familiar names here from the class of '61 and I too remember Coach Kobuskie as a fine and kind man. I believe he taught health class at one time but I am not sure. He was teaching at the junior high level during my time at Estee and always referred to me as a "Bleecker Dutchman" because our families had early ties to Bleecker. The coach was a fine man and excellent golfer as I would occasionally see him at the old Kingsboro Golf Course. No finer man ever walked the halls of GHS. May he rest in peace.

Jack leaves a legacy worth celebrating. How often is it today where a prominent sports figure is lauded not just for his athletic and coaching skills but also for his integrity, compassion, and love of community, family and friends? He was the epitome of a coach and teacher, and while he had no kids of his own, he helped raise a multitude of local youth, including me. Always the eternal optimist in search of a dream, he inspired so many youth to do their best, and in the process was endowed with the love and support of so many. While I mourn his passing, Jack will live in my memory as the wonderful friend he was to my family and to me.

There are no words to express the sadness I feel. To all members of the Kobuskie family, I send my deepest and most heart-felt sympathy. Jack's family attended the Lutheran church in Gloversville, where my grandfather, George Derwig was the minister and my grandmother, Louise Derwig, played the organ. Starting at age 6, I spent a few days at Kobusk's home on the Pinnacle in Bleecker. Jack, Irene, Kobusk "Grandma Diddy Daw", Esther, Aunt Trace, Buck, Len, Joe and the entire Kobuskie family left a life-long impression on me. I was supremely happy when I stayed at Kobusk's farm. Jack came to my grandmother's funeral and said, "There is so much of her in me." They were both saints on earth and they are now angels in heaven. Every time I return to upstate N.Y., I always visit Kobusk's house and listen to the song of the whip 'or wills in the fields.

Words to not properly convey all that a man like Coach Kobuskie meant to so many of us. When I came to GHS as a brand new teacher, he was one of the first to help me. He hired me as an assistant coach, and some of the best years of my life were spent on the bench with Jack, Coach Gene Satterlee and hundreds of GHS ball players that we all knew as OUR KIDS. While this is a sad day for so many of us, the fond memories of Coach and all that he taught us and meant to us will live on forever. Somewhere in heaven today, a kid is working on his jump shot and Coach Jack is there right next to him.... That is the way it should be .... Thanks Coach, we will miss you .
