Obituary of Donald MacVean
Donald Boyd MacVean, 93, departed peacefully on December 15, 2023 at Wilkinson Residential Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY.
Don was born on June 19, 1930 at home on the Broadalbin Farm to Percy MacVean and Perlia Dopp MacVean. He was the youngest boy in a family of 13 children and grew up with many fond tales of childhood adventure. He graduated from Broadalbin High School, class of 1947. Following graduation Don spent two years serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and remained close to his Army buddies throughout his life.
In September of 1951 Don was united in marriage to Ellen “Eileen” Allen. Together they built a home and life on Midline Rd where they remained for the rest of their days.
Don was briefly employed at Mohawk Carpet Mills, and spent most of his career installing carpet for several local businesses. In his later years he was employed by the Amsterdam Housing Authority. He enjoyed volunteering his time and loved to serve his community. Don was an active parishioner of Amsterdam Methodist Church, served on the Town of Amsterdam Planning Board, and could always be counted on to serve his community whenever needed. In his spare time Don enjoyed skiing and frequented Gore Mt. and Oak Mt. until the age of 86. He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and attended local Mohawks games. Most weekends Don could be found with Eileen at local auctions.
Don is survived by his daughter Barb (Ken) Somers, his sister Ruth Beyer, many nieces and nephews as well as the Brusoe family who provided friendship for many years. He will be dearly missed by his cat “Spot” and grand dog “Gracie”
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Eileen, his brothers Clement, Percy Jr., H. Ross, Charles, Robert, Clarence, and Arthur MacVean as well as his sisters Hazel Brownell, Thelma Lester, Marion Hughes, and Grace Everest.
Don will always be remembered as a kind, quiet, gentle man who enjoyed sharing port wine with family and friends.
A Calling Hour will take place on Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at Amsterdam Methodist Church 347 Golf Course Rd, Amsterdam.
