Obituary of Angelo D. Lomanto
Retired Judge Angelo D. Lomanto, of Gloversville, died peacefully at home on July 10th surrounded by the love of his family. He graduated from Gloversville High School, St. Bonaventure University, and Albany Law School. Prior to and while beginning a law practice, he worked with his sisters and brothers at Lomanto’s Fruit & Vegetable Market. He fulfilled his military service as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany.
He practiced law from 1960 as a partner at Lomanto, Lomanto & Jung. After beginning his judicial career in Gloversville City Court, in 1983, he was elected Fulton County Judge and Surrogate for the Fulton County Court, 4th Judicial District of NY where there was mutual respect between him and attorneys appearing in his court. After retiring in 2008, he enjoyed mediating as a judicial hearing officer for the New York State Retirement System.
Angelo was the devoted and beloved husband of 65 years of Grace (Fugazzotto) Lomanto; father of Angela Lomanto (John Nelson) of Great Barrington, MA; Concetta Lomanto (Charles Youngblood) of Slingerlands, NY; John Lomanto of Gloversville, NY; Maria Lomanto (Scott Childs) of Sleepy Hollow, NY; and the late Paul A. Lomanto and Mark E. Lomanto. He was “Papa” to Josue Lomanto, Gabriel Lomanto, Katherine Daniels, Stephanie Lomanto, Rachel Holliday Smith, Nicholas Youngblood, Alexandra Youngblood, Nina Daniels, Paul Lomanto, and Isabella Lomanto, and great grandchildren Grace Daniels and Vaughn Angelo Youngblood.
Born on December 11, 1931, to Rosario and Maria Lomanto, he was brother to Mary Jane Lomanto of Rochester and the late James Lomanto, Concetta Salluzzo, Joseph Lomanto, Sal Lomanto, Frances Spencer, and Edward Lomanto and brother-in-law to Dr. Pasquale Fugazzotto. He loved each and every one of his many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, and found great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was past president of the Fulton County Bar Association and a member of the Elks Club, the Catholic War Veterans, Knights of Columbus, and the Eccentric Club. As a member of the Fulton County Republican Club, he received the Charles Hough Memorial Award in 2019.
A lifelong communicant of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church (now Church of the Holy Spirit), he served on the Parish Council as president and trustee.
Angelo will be remembered for his unfailing loyalty and love of his family, and generosity for those in need. He won the respect of friends and colleagues, serving as mentor and advisor to many. His thorough attention to detail, deep knowledge of local history, and passion for genealogy fueled many conversations. His adventurousness and capacity for fun showed in his wry sense of humor, his love of swing dancing and jitterbugging at Sherman’s and St. Anthony’s Church, poker, travel, sports, and music – even learning to ski at age 40. In his last weeks, despite failing health he never squandered an opportunity to express his earnest gratitude and appreciation to those who cared for him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Bonaventure University or the Gloversville Library Foundation.
