Obituary of Sylvia Gilbert Parker
Sylvia Gilbert Parker, 88, of Mayfield, NY; passed away peacefully on February 6, 2023, at Nathan Littauer Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born in Mayfield NY; on October 9, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Hugh M. and Agnes E. (Lent) Gilbert. Sylvia was also predeceased by her husband Melvin Parker and brother Lucian Gilbert.
Survived by her sister Susan (Richard) Hall, nephews/nieces: Jeff (Eileen) Gilbert, Kevin (Kim) Gilbert, Scot (Louise) Gilbert, Rick (Laurie) Gilbert, Eric (Jen) Hall, Jeannie (Mike) Schneider, Jaymessa (Bill) Matthews, and 13 great nieces and nephews. Also survived by dear lifelong friend Dona Hayden. Special care given by Robin, Larry and April Havens.
Sylvia was a 1952 graduate of Mayfield Central School. She received her degree in education from Cortland State College and enjoyed a long successful career in the Mayfield School District as a health teacher and cheerleading coach. Throughout her life Sylvia was active in the community which included serving as the President of the Mayfield Historical Society, Supervisor of Mayfield, Grand Marshal of the Bannertown Fair and member of the Republican Club. Sylvia loved living in Cranberry Creek on the shore of Great Sacandaga Lake and was one of the originators of the Ring of Fire with her mother Agnes. She was fond of boating and spending time with the “Boat Girls”. Traveling near and far with family and friends brought her much joy through the years. Sylvia was also a collector of fun things like Disney movies and Beanie Babies. Friends and family were always welcome at Sylvia’s and her candy dish was never empty. Sylvia will be missed by all.
A Celebration of Life Service will take place in the spring or summer and will be announced.
