Obituary of Gordon L. Hirschfeld

Gordon L. “Gordy” Hirschfeld, 77, life-long resident of Amsterdam, New York, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Gordy was born on August 9, 1945 to the late Charles and Helen (Van Nort) Hirschfeld.

In 1965, Gordy was united in marriage to Donna Koons, with whom he has shared the past 58 years.

From childhood Gordy was always mechanically inclined; taking apart his toys to learn how they worked, and then putting them back together. As he grew up on his parent’s farm, he was able to learn how the machinery worked, and how to fix it. It was no surprise when Gordy began working as a mechanic as soon as he was able, at the age of 16. Over the course of 49 years Gordy worked at many different auto shops throughout Amsterdam, and spent the last 14 years of his career working for the City of Amsterdam  Department of Public Works, until his retirement in 2010.

Whenever Gordy wasn’t at work, you could always find him in his garage. He was well known in the community as a local “Mr. Fix-it” who could repair anything with a motor. Gordy was a reliable friend to many, and was always willing to lend a hand.

Gordy leaves behind his loving wife, Donna Hirschfeld; sons Randy (Tammy) Hirschfeld and Tracy (Ruth) Hirschfeld; his grandchildren, Michelle Lynch, Brandi Hirschfeld, and Matthew Hirschfeld; his brother, Bryan (Carol) Hirschfeld; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

In Gordy’s spirit, please join his family in celebrating his life at Gordy’s garage on Saturday, February 18, 2023, any time after 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Community Hospice at givetocommunityhospice.org/donate
