David Esper

Obituary of David J. Esper

David J. Esper, age 68, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening, April 10, 2021 at the family's summer home at Caroga Lake, NY while fly-fishing, a sport that he truly loved.

He was born May 9, 1952 in Providence, Rhode Island, the eldest child of Dr. John and Joan Nicholson Esper. He was a graduate of Castleton College and West Virginia University. He was employed as Director of Mc Pike ACT through the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports until his retirement in 2010. David should have written a book on how to enjoy every minute of retirement, except that he was very busy having fun with all that he loved. If David became your friend, you knew that he was a true friend. If he loved you, it was unconditional. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed with enthusiasm fishing, skiing, music, tennis, hunting and ballroom dancing. In his younger years he played the organ at the former St. Mary's Church, Gloversville.

David is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kathleen A. McGarigle Esper of Utica; a daughter, Michelle Iddings; grandchildren Beatrice, Darcianne and Joseph and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his father, Dr. John W. Esper of Gloversville; seven brothers and sisters, Anita Allen (John) of Caroga Lake, Dr. John A. "Chip" Esper (Kelly) of Lake Placid, Kathleen E. Jackson (Peter) of Granby, CT, Dr. Daniel W. Esper (Sarah) of Slingerlands, Joan E. Kuhnly (B. Scott) of Granby, CT, James M. Esper (Sheri) of Gloversville and Nancy E. Byrne (Joseph) of Tully, NY; as well as many nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts, including a special cherished bond with aunt Anita Potocar. The best decision Dave ever made was when he married Kathy. At that time, he inherited six sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law with their spouses and children.

David was predeceased by his mother, Joan Nicholson Esper.

For the safety of family and friends during the pandemic, a private Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the convenience of the family at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville.  A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date when safety is no longer a concern.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Mohawk valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited for Youth, 39 Beechnut, Whitesboro, NY 13492.

Arrangement have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.
