John Castiglione

Obituary of John V. Castiglione

John Vincent Castiglione, 80 of Gloversville, passed away on January 31, 2021, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with kidney failure and other medical issues.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years (together for 33 years), Carol L. Kilburn; his sister Johanne Papa (Mario); his six children: Robin (Mimi), James (Maria), Joseph, Tracy Cunha, Kevin Cary and Claudette Cary Mihaly; his nine grandchildren: Sarah, Andrew, Bailey, Nicholas, Natalie, David, Kyle, Nathan, Bryce, Devin and Emilio; his niece and nephew Stacia and David Jung.

The son of the late Jim and Mary Castiglione, John graduated from Gloversville High School in 1958. He continued his studies at Delhi College, graduating with an AA in Business Administration and continued on to Ryder College, graduating with a BA in Business Administration. After college graduation, John worked on the staff of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, then GAB Adjustments. John served in the Army National Guard from 1963-1971 with honorable discharge as First Lieutenant. John worked for the NYS Thruway Authority for 22 years and retired in 2002. John started the first girl’s softball league in Bethlehem, NY, with Miss Softball America and coached for several years. John coached Pop Warner Football for many years in Gloversville, Albany and Delmar, NY. John was appointed by Mayor Reppenhagen to the Gloversville Planning Board and Recreation Commission from
2016-2017, ran and was elected to City Council Ward 2 and served from 2008-2012. John was appointed by Mayor King to Gloversville Housing Authority Board of Governors and served as Chairman until August 2020.

Sports was a major love of his life and helping children get involved in sports. John loved Notre Dame “Go Irish!”, golf, cooking, westerns, his beloved cats, and most of all his time with beloved family, friends and golfing buddies. John’s fondest memories are of his loving parents, sisters, cousins, the Feast of the Fishes every Christmas, summers at the VanSkyver Cabins on Sacandaga Lake with his wife and children, shared parenting with his sister, and time with wife, children and grandchildren. John was always interested in continuing to learn, was engaged in conversation, and even in these last months cooking and cookbooks. We loved him and will miss him with all our hearts, and hope he is resting in peace.
