Obituary of Charlie Papa
Mr. Charles A. Papa, “Charlie,” 90 years old, of Gloversville, passed away Tuesday November 26, 2019 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home. Charlie passed like he lived: surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He was born April 3, 1929 in Gloversville, the son of the late Mario and Bridget Porto Papa. He proudly served in the US Army as a Sergeant. After returning from service, Charlie was aCo-Owner and Operator of his family’s business, Mario Papa and Sons, where he labored alongside many employees whom he cared for deeply.
On May 5, 1955, Charles was married to the love of his life Beatrice Carbonelli. The couple shared 59 years of marriage in Gloversville where they lived, worked and reared their loving family until her passing in 2015.
Charlie is survived by his daughter Lisa (Don) Stanyon; his son, Charles D. (Rosemary Rice) Papa; two grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan (Angela) Stanyon; his step grandchildren, Melanie (Andrew) Lathrop with their son Carson, Amanda (August) Rosa with their children Ani and Allie, and Jeffrey (Mahgan) Town; his sister in law, Shirley Papa; along with several other nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents Charlie was predeceased by his five beloved older siblings, Alfonso (Marguerite) Papa, Dominic (Angeline) Papa, Madeline (Louis) Franco, Mary (Santo) Russo and Hortenzio Papa who helped raise Charlie and were among the most influential people in his life.
Charlie was a Past Grad Knight and 4th Degree member of the Gloversville Knights of Columbus Council 265, the Chairman of the United Way Foundation, a member of the board of the Fulton County YMCA Board of Directors, Nathan Littauer Board of Directors, a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit’s Holy Names Society and a member of The Eccentric Club. In Charlie’s later years he was adopted by the Mendetta’s breakfast club family with whom he routinely shared fond memories and companionship.
Charlie will be remembered as a magnetic figure bringing friends and family together through his sincere and generous personality.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00PM to 7:00PM, Monday December 2, 2019 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00AM, Tuesday December 3, 2019 at Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St. Gloversville, NY 12078.
Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown following the Mass.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S Main St. Gloversville, NY 12078; Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, 99 E State St. Gloversville, NY 12078 or to a charity of your choice in Charlie’s name.
