“Mom”, how I used to call her, opened her home and heart to “adopt”, for almost a year, an AFS foreign exchange student from Cali, Colombia. She and, of course, Herbie (“Dad”) made sure I was part of the family and became their “daughter” since August 1974. Subsequently, she also adopted my husband Ramon as her “so-in- law” and my daughter Diana and my son Felipe as her “grandchildren”. Every year, she made sure, we each received Birthday and Christmas packages which she delivered months ahead to ensure we would get them on time.
Our hearts were deeply saddened when we learned about her departure, but many beautiful memories filled with laughter and joy came to our mind right away.
I will never forget the delicious daily meals which she prepared when she came back from work. She introduced me to polish foods like “Pierogies”, “Golompkies” and the delicious “Kielbasa”. I will also remember how we both loved the Johnny Carson Show. We stayed up late, even during school nights, and enjoyed watching it together.
The relationship established since 1974, lasted all these years. We kept in touch through letters, phone calls, visits and presents. I was able to see her again several times after my exchange year was over. Both “Mom” and “Dad” traveled to my hometown in two occasions. My Family and I were able to visit her in Gloversville in three opportunities. She even traveled long distances to meet us whenever we came to USA. Once, she flew down to Orlando to join us during our family trip to Disney World and on another opportunity, she and her dear friends the Mazur`s, drove all the way to Kingston, Canada to meet me while I was attending a Seminar in that city.
“Mom” left a strong mark in our hearts. We will always remember her and love her forever.
Our deepest condolences to Mike, Cathy, Mark, Kathy, Cheryl, Bill, Amy, Michelle, Michael, Ali, Joseph, Nancy, Meghan, Thomas and her great grandchildren.
With love,
Maritza

She was a friend and role model to many. I am so grateful to have had her love me like one of her own grandchildren. So many of my childhood memories include her and Grandpa Herbie. She always let me play her organ and never complained. Still, to this day, when I see a "chicken and hen" growing in a rock wall I think of her. I will eat some vanilla ice cream with creme de menthe on it, in her honor, and it will always make me think of her. I loved her like my Grandma and will hold the memory of her dear! ❤️

Mike and Cathy and family. So very sad to read this. Your Mom was such a lovely person inside and out. Her deep love for her children was only second to her love for Herbie. I'm sure they are happy to be together again. Our prayers for peace and strength during this time of profound loss. We love you

Mrs. Martin was my kindergarten teacher in the "annex" where Hair Station Five is located now. Julia went to school with my mother, Luella Vrooman, so I remember hearing a lot about her while growing up. I'm so very sorry for your loss. She was and excellent teacher!
