Obituary of Norman J. Cohen
Norman J. Cohen, age 91, of Gloversville, died Friday evening, November 9, 2018 at his home.
He was born August 14, 1927 in Gloversville, the son of the late Philip and Frances Rubin Cohen. He was 1944 graduate of Gloversville High School and served in the US Army during World War II. While serving his country he performed in the Army Band playing drums. He later attended Utica College and The New School in New York City.
Norman proudly owned and operated Beacon Wholesale, a third generation business, with origins as Cohen's Dept. Store.
He has been a lifelong pillar of Knesseth Israel Synagogue and the Gloversville Jewish Community. He was also the founder of the Cohen Shamrocks Softball Team of Gloversville.
Norman is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Goldstein Cohen; three children, Dr. Barry Cohen (Anna) of Philadelphia, PA, George Cohen (Yolanda) of Boston, MA and Suzanne Severin (Stephen) of Amherst, MA; seven grandchildren, Jacob Cohen, Haylee Cohen, Jade Cohen, Jeffrey Cohen, Dennis Cohen, Ryan Severin and Matthew Severin.
Services will be held 11a.m. Monday, November 12 at Kenesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 E. Fulton St; Gloversville, with Suzanne J. Schermerhorn officiating.
Interment will take follow at Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Gloversville.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.
