Obituary of Nicholas A. Sampone Sr.

     Nicholas A. Sampone, 81, of Amsterdam, NY passed away Saturday August 25, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam with his loving family at his side.

     Nick was the only child of Josephine (Bonafede) and Anthony Sampone.  He graduated from the former Wilbur H. Lynch Senior High School in 1954, then earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry at Clarkson College, Pottsdam, NY in 1958. 

     He then went on to serve in  Ordinance Corps of the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, attaining the rank of Captain in the Army reserve.   Following his tour of Duty he was united in marriage with Mary Elizabeth Leggiero on October 18, 1959 at St. Michael's Church in Amsterdam,  by the Rev. Joseph Beck.  Mr. Sampone was employed by the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory at their West Milton and Niskayuna facilities for over 30 years.  He was employed as  a Chemist and Chemical Engineer in the Navy Nuclear Power training and testing units.  Following his retirement from G.E., he was employed by the MCT Credit Union, Market Street professional Plaza, and the Baldwin Research Institute of Amsterdam.

     Nick was a communicant of  Historic St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.

     He is survived by his wife of 58 years,  Mary E. Sampone,  a daughter, Lisa Marie (Joseph) Hogan , a son,  Nicholas Jr. (Wendy),  grandsons, Nicholas III (Maria) and Daniel (Dawn) Hogan, Two great-granddaughters, Laurita Paige and Victoria Jade Sampone,  nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

    The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday August 29, 2018 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam.  A Prayer service will take place following the visitation on Wednesday at 7:00 Pm at the funeral home.   Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.    In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Church Development Fund in care of the funeral home.  Please leave condolences online at www.brbsfuneral.com.
