Obituary of Alma M. Doane
Alma May Doane fell asleep in death on May 26, 2016 at 95 years of age. She was born on January 19, 1921 in St. Johnsbury, VT to Carl and Minnie Fuller. Alma was their 3rd child and the eldest daughter.
On January 29, 1944, Alma married Jesse Joseph Howe. The couple eventually settled in Broadalbin, in a house that they built on Second Avenue. She was a member of the Broadalbin Methodist Church. In addition to being a wife and mother to 2 children, Alma worked at Kennyetto Dry Cleaners and Broadalbin Furniture Factory. She was also an accomplished seamstress and this was her vocation into her later years. After 34 years of marriage, death parted Alma from Jesse. In 1979, she married Lester Doane and they relocated to Vermont, where she remained until a few years after Lester's death.
In 1993, Alma moved back to the Broadalbin area. She greatly loved her family and was especially close to her grandchildren. Alma enjoyed her work as a seamstress and also created several embroidered pictures. In her retirement years, she was able to take several cruises with a close companion, Elmer Pauling. She was a vibrant, hard working woman who enjoyed the outdoors, dogs, baseball, and giving of herself to others.
Alma is survived by her son, George (Dorell) Howe of Johnstown; her daughter Patricia (Robert Metzger) Howe of The Villages, FL; her granddaughters Becky (Dennis) Hatcher and Holly McCloskey; and great-grandchildren Greyson (Bryn) Snyder and Maura McCloskey. She is also survived by her sister, Gloria (Dale) Freihofer of Swanzey, NH.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Charles (who died as an infant), Kermit, Wendell, Carl, Wilma, Dorothy, and Maurice.
The family will hold a private, grave side service and gathering in September.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, Broadalbin.
