Obituary of Philip J. Spencer

Philip J. Spencer Spalletta 75, of Country Club Lane Ft. Johnson, passed away suddenly Thursday morning at his home. Born in Floral Park, Long Island, on August 12, 1929, the son of Joseph and Josephine Spalletta, he was a graduate of the Sewanaca High School and later of Adelphi College. He served with the US Army during the Korean conflict. Following the war, Phil began his lifelong career in broadcasting. He first worked for a radio station in High Point, N.C., later with WENT in Gloversville, and following his move to Amsterdam in 1957, WCSS Radio. He retired in 1986 as an owner of the station. His many civic and fraternal memberships through the years include the New York State Broadcasters Asso., of which he served as past president; and the National Association of Broadcasters Board Of Directors , he was a former member of the Advisory Board of St. Mary?s Hospital , he was a past president of the Kiwanis Club, and a past member of the Amsterdam Elks Lodge 101. He served as a supervisor for the Town Of Amsterdam for two terms. An avid supporter of the Brooklyn Dodgers, now the L.A. Dodgers, he was a scout for several years and a correspondent for the Dodger dugout. He and his wife also maintained a residence in Vero Beach Fla. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill. On April 13, 1952 he was united in marriage to the former Frances Lomanto . In addition to his wife, his loving family includes his son, Philip R. Spencer and his wife Arlene of Hagaman; his grandchildren; Joseph, Elizabeth, James and Gabrielle Spencer; and nieces, nephews and cousins. His son; Joseph E. Spencer predeceased him on Jan. 21, 1986. His sister Grace Greco also passed away. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass Of The Ressurection on Monday At 10:00 am at St. Mary Of Mt. Carmel Church 149 So. Main Street Gloversville. There are no calling hours at Phil?s request. Spring interment will take place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Contributions may be made to a charity of one?s choice. The family has entrusted his arrangements to the care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
