Obituary of H. Paul Olsen

H. Paul Olsen, age 93, of 11 Hope Falls Road, Hope, NY died Monday at home after a long illness. Mr. Olsen was born November 12, 1911 in Baltimore, MD, son of the late H.J. and Mae Barnes Olsen. He was a graduate of Trappe High School in Trappe, MD, and earned a business degree from Goldie Collge in Wilmington, Delaware. He was employed as an estimator for General Electric for many years before retiring in 1960. Mr. Olsen spent his summers in Northville for the last 15 years, becoming a permanent resident two years ago. He will be remembered as an avid woodworker, whose talent, brightness, and zest for life will be deeply missed. He was known for his love of tennis, motorcycle riding, and sailing, all of which he continued enjoying well into his eighties. A long time and devoted member of Glovier United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, VA, he had taught Sunday School for over 60 years, and sang in the choir. He recenlty attended Northville Baptist Church in Northville, NY. An accomplished musician, he played various horn instruments, with great pleasure. Survivors include his wife, M. Ruth Tompson Olsen of Northville, whom he married September 7, 1988, two daughters, Carol and her husband Reverend David Efting of Colton, CA; Jeannie and her husband Joe Kollarits of Stuarts Draft, VA; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his daughter Kathy Stephens, two grandchildren, and a sister Mary Conklin. Additional survivors include his stepchildren, Carol Flexon of Dolgeville, NY; Laura and her husband Sheldon Ginter, of Northville, NY, Beth and her husband Larry Sinisi of Northville, NY and James and his wife Ellen Flexon of Las Vegas, NV; eleven stepgrandchildren, twelve step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, his brothers Roger Olsen of Schenectady, NY, Clarence Olsen of Denton, MD, Francis Olsen of Hobe Sound, FL and Alvin Olsen of Florida. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Freemont Street, Gloversville. Funeral services and burial will take place in Waynesboro, VA on Saturday, February 19.
