Obituary of Roy Harold Cooper
Roy Harold Cooper Jr., 86, of 4293 State Highway 30 Lot 81, Amsterdam, passed away peacefully Monday morning at 10:35 am at St. Mary?s Hospital with his loving family at his side.
Born in Syracuse NY on November 21, 1918 to Roy Harold Cooper Sr., and Anne DeYoe Cooper. The family first moved to Gloversville and then to Albany when Roy was about five years of age. He graduated from Albany High School in 1938. They returned to Gloversville where he and his father operated Cooper?s Cigar Store.
Following his marriage on Feb. 5, 1941 to the former Dorothea Getright of Amsterdam, he began his career at General Electric Company in Schenectady. In 1943, Roy joined the US Navy as a Seabee and served during World War II being honorably discharged in 1945.
He returned to GE after the war and retired in 1980 with over forty two years of service as a crane operator.
Roy?s greatest contribution in life was his devotion to his wife and children. Along with his humorous nature, he exemplified fatherhood. He was , beyond everything a else, a father, friend, leader and teacher to everyone. Mr. Cooper coached baseball little league for at least twenty years. While working nights at General Electric he delivered groceries for Grand Union among other stores during the day, and Christmas Trees during the holidays. A proud member of the GE Quarter Century Club, the Heritage and Genealogical Society of Montgomery County in Fonda, the Charleston Historical Society, the Montgomery County Historical Society in Ft. Johnson and the Erie Canal Society. He was a longtime member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of sixty four years, Dorothea Getright Cooper at home, a son Joel Roy Cooper of 2560 St. Hilare, Moxee, WA., and his daughter Candice Dae Cook of 14 San Luis Rd. Gansevoort, NY; four grandchildren, Kimberly N. Rashell of Kent, WA.; Jason P. Cooper of Moxee WA., Edson Cook of Gansevoort, and Samantha Loucks of Amsterdam; a great grandson Tyler J. Loucks and another great grandchild on the way, plus numerous cousins.
Services are Thursday at 10:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. Alice A. Monschke officiating. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Calling hours are this evening from
4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in Roy?s name to Community Hospice Of Amsterdam, 246 Manny Corners Rd. Amsterdam 12010.
