Obituary of Abbie Sands
Mrs. Abbie ?Ethel? Sands, 82, formerly of Ft. Plain, NY current resident of Main St., St. Johnsville passed away late Monday night at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica, NY after a long illness.
Born on January 16, 1923 on Shunk Rd., in Ames NY she was the daughter of Walter and Ethel Reno Shunk. She was graduate of Canajoharie Central School and was a lifelong area resident living many years in the Canajoharie, Ft. Plain and St. Johnsville areas.
During World War II she was employed by Blatts Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ, then going to work for Wassermann?s Hotel in Sharon Springs where she worked as a waitress and a cook. She also worked at Samuels in Canajoharie until going to work for Beech-Nut where she worked for 30 years. Later she worked at the Village Restaurant in Canajoharie as well as Tasti Freeze in Palatine Bridge.
She was a member of the St. Johnsville Reformed Church, the D.A.R. Ft. Plain Chapter, and was a past member of the St. Johnsville Senior citizens and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She married her husband of 54 years, Charles ?Bucky? Sands Sr. on December 19, 1942. Charles passed into heavenly bliss on February 8, 1996. She was also predeceased by an infant son, Louis Charles Sands; a grandson, Chad Sands who passed away in 2001; and a brother, Everett Shunk.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Ann Weaver and her husband Danny of Nelliston; a son Charles W. Sands Jr. and his fiancée Vicki of Herkimer; 3 grandchildren, Stacy Weaver and his wife Jessica of Ft. Plain, Eric Weaver and his wife Lynn of Starkville, and Tara Sands of Randall; 4 great grandchildren, Amber Lynn Weaver, Eric James Weaver, Kassaundra Marie Weaver, and Alise Mary Angel Lambert; she is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie with the Rev. Jennifer Reece officiating. The burial will take place in the Ames Cemetery, Ames. The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Main St., St. Johnsville, NY 13452.
