Obituary of Elizabeth A. Smith
Mrs. Elizabeth Betty A. Smith, 90, formerly of Clizbe Avenue, Amsterdam and Lakeside Drive, Mayfield, resident of Kings Road, Schenectady, died Wednesday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam.
Born March 8, 1915, in Amsterdam, New York, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Emma Hazlett McCaffrey. She was a resident of Amsterdam for 63 years until moving to Florida in 1981 and in May of 2000 Betty moved to Schenectady where she has since resided.
Betty was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School Class of 1932 and later she graduated from the Amsterdam School of Commerce.
She was employed as a secretary for the late Attorney Clinton Cole; Amsterdam City Hall and was last employed by the Greater Amsterdam School District for a number of years until retiring in 1965.
She was a member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church.
Betty enjoyed the sun, beach, horseracing, family gatherings, parties, bingo, card games, crossword puzzles and collected elephants.
On June 12, 1937, she married John Thomas Smith who died January 16, 1992.
Survivors include her loving family; two daughters: Carol A. Wachholz of Stockton, California and Nancy L. Tyler and her husband Roger I. of Perth; a brother William E. McCaffrey of Schenectady; three grandchildren: Eric J. Tyler and his wife Kim of Scotia, Alane Wachholz of Stockton, CA and Lee Wachholz of Billings, Montana; one step- grandson, Randy Tyler of Caanan, Vermont; three great grandchildren: Keirsten and Nicole Wachholz of Billings, Montana and Mikerica M. Tyler of Scotia.
Betty was predeceased by a step- granddaughter, Gina J. Tyler, who died on January 28, 2005.
Funeral services will be held on Monday August 1, 2005 at 11:30 at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, N.Y. with the Rev. Cynthia Leonard officiating. Burial will take place in Hagaman Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the
funeral home. A Legacy Candle Ceremony will be held on Sunday at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
