Obituary of Fred G. Hallenbeck
Mr. Fred G. ?Fritz? Hallenbeck Sr., age 82 of Gloversville, died Monday, September 12, 2005 with his family at his side.
He was born August 2, 1923 in Cranberry Creek, NY, the son of the late Charles and Nellie Garrett Hallenbeck. A 1942 graduate of Gloversville High School, Fred served in the Army during World War II in Europe from 1942-1945. He had worked at the former Tri-City Vending Company and at Farhart?s Buick Garage. In 1959 he joined his father-in-law as a partner in the operation of the former Ackel?s Restaurant on South Main Street in Gloversville. Fred enjoyed the business, and In 1971 he moved across the street and opened Ackel?s Grill, which he and his wife Marie retired from in 1983.
Fred was well-known as a toy-maker, and sold his hand-made wooden toys at area craft shows. He also enjoyed bowling, traveling, fishing, camping, and his family and friends.
He was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church and its Holy Name Society, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a life member of the Gloversville VFW, and a member of the Gloversville 50-55 Plus Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Ackel Hallenbeck, whom he married on May 17, 1958; three children, Carol Schlecht Donald of Rockport, TX; Frederick Hallenbeck, Jr. Toni of Vail Mills and Frank Hallenbeck Sherry of Woodbury, CT;a brother, James Hallenbaeck Marie of Gloversville; a sister, Dorothy Baldwin Robert of Gloversville; six grandchildren, Guy Leo, Mark Williams, John Hallenbeck, Holli Hallenbeck, Eric Hallenbeck and Christopher Hallenbeck; three great grandchildren, Michael Williams, Catherine Leo and Collin Ball; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ernie, Clarence, Robert and Gertrude Bradt, Laura Snyder and Myrtle Lawton; and great-granddaughter, Cathy Williams.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted 9:15 AM Friday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
