Obituary of Hazel M. Newport
Hazel M. Newport, 93, of Mohawk Drive, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Batavia, NY on Feb. 13, 1912, the daughter of Herman and Hazel Sharon Fones, she lived in this area most of her life.
A home maker, Hazel was an excellent cook and baker and was an avid Yankee fan.
She was a devoted member of the Fonda Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Recently, she attended Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church with her sister. Hazel was active her entire life and loved spending time with her family.
On Nov. 17, 1933 she was united in marriage to Edward Charles Newport. He predeceased her on Feb. 8, 1988.
Also a son, David E. Newport, and a brother, Erwin Fones predeceased her.
Her loving family includes her son, Douglas C. and his wife Mariellen Newport of North Adams Mass.; her dear sister, with whom she resided for many years, Anita Countermine of Tribes Hill; grandchildren; Mark Newport of Mesa Az., Michael Newport of Clayton, NY, and Julie Reilly of Adams Mass; five great grandchildren; Jennifer, Amanda, Andrew, Chloe and Zachary; as well as nieces and nephews.
Services are Friday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam NY, The Rev. Richard Countermine, her nephew, and Rev. Christopher DeGraaf will officiate.
Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Tribes Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. in care of the funeral home.
