Obituary of Stephen J. Satas
Stephen J. Satas, 82, of Coolidge Rd., passed away peacefully on Sunday morning with his niece Deanne and her husband Joseph at his side.
Born in Amsterdam on May 16, 1923, the son of the late Frank and Veronica Satas. He graduated from St. Casimir?s School and Wilbur H. Lynch High and resided in Amsterdam his entire life.
Stephen proudly served in the United States Army Paratrooper and Infantry during World War II, and received his honorable discharge. He was decorated with the Bronze Star, three Purple Heart medals, the Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Emblem, the American Campaign Medal, European Campaign Medal, World War II Victory medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Carbine Bar and Honorable Service Lapel Button for WW II. He was a member of the Disabled America Veterans and was a lifelong communicant of St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church.
Although Stephen did not have any children of his own, he became a devoted father to his niece Deanne, raising her from birth as his own daughter.
Steve was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed going to Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium.
He spent his leisure time reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, watching the Red Sox and closely following the stock market.
Steve loved to play the horses, going to Saratoga Racetrack and the casinos and weekend trips to Joe?s camp to swim, boat and relax. He looked forward every year to his month long vacation to Fort Myers Beach, Fla. He loved the independence of riding his scooter up and down the beach and around the island. He took great pride in navigating his boat on the Gulf of Mexico, earning the name of ?Captain Bud?. He loved to watch the sunsets over the ocean, drinking champagne from his balcony.
Stephen leaves behind his ?daughter? Deanne Zostant Galipeau and her husband Joseph of Amsterdam, his special nephew, Jeffrey V. Satas of Seattle, WA and also nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Benny V. Satas, and sisters, Jean M. Zostant and Frances Janis.
At Steve?s request, the Mass of Christian Burial will be private. Interment is in St. Casimir?s Cemetery. There are no calling hours, and contributions may be made to St. Casimir?s Memorial Fund, 260 East Main Street, Amsterdam.
