Obituary of Eugene Fonda
Eugene J. Fonda, 82, of Grieme Avenue, passed away Sunday morning, October 30, at Montgomery Meadows following a lengthy illness.
Born in Niskayuna on August 9, 1923, the son of Eugene Fonda and Dorothy DeSelle Fonda Marks.
He began a lifelong career as a truck driver with several Schenectady firms such as Lattanzio Ready Mix, DeLuke?s and Electric City Inc. He later was a driver for the City of Amsterdam Transportation Department until he retired in 1997. Gene was a member of Teamster?s Local 294.
During World War II, he served with the US Army in the European Theater of Operations.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church. On September 5, 1942, he was united in marriage to the former Edith M. Iannotti. She predeceased him in 1998. Also, his son, Eugene A. Fonda, predeceased him in 2002.
Gene was an avid Mets fan and was a frequent visitor to the local OTB Parlor.
He was a devoted husband, and lovingly cared for his beloved Edith prior to her passing.
He is survived by his grandson, Robert Herndon; great grandchildren, Peyton, Tanner and Bryce Herndon; brothers in law, Anthony and Norma Iannotti of Rotterdam, Andrew and Marilyn Iannotti and John and Helen Iannotti all of Amsterdam; daughter in law, Lynn Fonda of Virginia; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are Thursday at 8:15 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be con celebrated at 9:15 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Frs. Lawrence J. Decker and Pascal A. Iannotti celebrants. Calling hours are Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will take place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Memorial Fund, or the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, to whom Gene was most grateful for his wife?s care. The family would also like to acknowledge the entire staff at Montgomery Meadows for the wonderful care Gene received.
