Obituary of Jonas John Barkauskas
Jonas John Barkauskas passed away peacefully Sunday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital after a brief illness. Jonas was born in Schenectady, New York the son of the late Thomas and Caroline Barkauskas. He and his family relocated to Lithuania from Schenectady when he was a small child, and he received his education there. He served in the Lithuanian Army as an officer and later was employed as a Captain of Police in the city of Kaunas. Jonas returned to the USA in 1950 and resided in Schenectady until moving to Amsterdam in 1967.Jonas was employed by the American Locomotive Company and later worked for the City of Schenectady until his retirement.He was a member of the former American Lithuanian Club and was a communicant of St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church.He is survived by his wife, the former Sadye Vaitelis, whom he married in 1967.Also, several nieces and nephews residing in Lithuania, and cousins in Scotia, Schenectady and Niskayuna also survive.Services are Wednesday at 9:45 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Casimir?s R.C. Church. Interment is in St. Casimir?s Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Contributions in Jonas? name may be made to St. Casimir?s Cemetery Fund, the Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of one?s choice.
