Obituary of Paul D. Schmidtmann
Paul D. Schmidtmann, 64, 3rd Avenue, Tribes Hill, died Wednesday afternoon at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born November 9, 1941, in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late Eric and Ruth Ott Schmidtmann. He was a 1959 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam.
Paul first worked at the Salamack?s Market on Market Hill in Amsterdam and after was employed as a manager for Save Way Food Markets in the capital district. He later owned and operated Philbrook?s Market in Fultonville for 17 years until retiring in April of 2000 due to ill health.
Paul was a Scout Leader for the Tribes Hill Scout Troop for a number of years and he was a member of the F.J.G. Square Dancing Club.
He was a parishioner of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill.
Paul loved spending time with his family and square dancing and was very dedicated to the fund raising events for the St. Jude?s Telethon held at his market in Fultonville and events with Joey Caruso. He also helped with fund raising for Fultonville residents in need.
On September 10, 1961, he married the former Judy T. Abate.
Besides his dear wife, he is survived by his loving family: a son, Paul David Anthony Schmidtmann, Jr. and his wife Mary Lou of the Town of Perth; a daughter, Kimberly A. Warner and her husband Peter of Fort Hunter; a brother, Donald Schmidtmann of Amsterdam; a sister, Pauline VanDyke of Gloversville; three grandchildren, John LaPorta, Craig Bishop and Kurt Warner; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Paul was predeceased by a brother, Eric Schmidtmann.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 23, 2006, at 10:00 am at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill, New York with the Rev. Patrick Gallagher officiating. Burial will take place in spring in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue in Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made in Paul?s memory to the St. Jude?s Children?s Cancer Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
