Obituary of Robert J. Coon

Mr. Robert J. Coon, age 81, formerly of Meco, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, following a long illness. He had been a resident of the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility for nearly one year. He was born May 23, 1924 in Gloversville, the son of the late Albert and Iva Gifford Coon. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II, and was a driver for General George Patton. He was employed as a lineman and cable splicer by GTE of Johnstown for 32 years, retiring in 1979. Bob was a founding member and past Chief of the Meco Volunteer Fire Dept; a former member of the Adirondack Beagle and Hare Club, and was the proud owner of two chapions. He also had a great love for horses and trotting breed racing ponies, showing and racing them at various horse facilities in New York and Vermont. He was married to Shirley J. Smith of Caroga Lake on July 29, 1950 who survives. He is also survived by three sons, Gregory Coon Lori, Russell Coon Brenda, and Darrell Coon Robin, all of Meco; a daughter, Sheryl Herron Daniel of Johnstown; three brothers, Donlad Coon Carol, Douglas Coon Marcia, and Willard Coon Genevieve; six grandchildren, Melissa Coon, Jessica Coon , Christine Coon, Russell Coon Jr; Stacey Coon and Jordan Herron. He was preceded in death a son, Wayne Coon; and a sister, Eleanor Brandow. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Meco Volunteer Fire Dept., c/o Roy Palmateer, 473 Co. Hwy. 122, Gloversville, NY 12078.
