Obituary of Helen Gawron Boccio

Helen Gawron Boccio, 84, of Brookside Avenue, passed away late Saturday evening at St. Mary?s Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Amsterdam on October 6, 1921, she was the only daughter of George and Agatha Broniczewska Gawron, she lived here her entire life. A 1940 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, she later attended the Amsterdam School of Commerce. Helen was first employed by the Eddy Brush Factory, and later for the General Electric Company in Schenectady before she retired in 1984. Following her retirement, she became active with the St. Stan?s Seniors, St. John?s Seniors and the Inman Seniors, and was a frequent participant in the many trips that were offered. Her favorites included the Foxwood Casino. An avid bowler, she was a member of many local leagues. Helen was a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, and was a member of its Rosary Society. Her family will truly miss her wonderful Polish and Italian delicacies that she lovingly shared with them. On August 19, 1945, she was united in marriage to Salvatore Boccio, Sr. He predeceased her on Nov. 21, 1984. Her brothers, Chester, Stephen and Raymond also predeceased her. Her loving family includes her daughters, Agnes Restifo and her husband Joseph of Schenectady and Mary DeRose of Amsterdam; sons, Salvatore Boccio, Jr. of Amsterdam and John Boccio and his wife Deborah of Albany; her surviving brother, Frank Gawron of Orlando, Florida; her grandchildren whom she adored, Amanda and Alex Boccio, Ashley DeRose, Christopher and Matthew Restifo, and a great grandson, Nikolas Restifo; many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Services are Wednesday morning at 8:45 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St. John the Baptist Church with Fr. Stanley J. Swierzowski, celebrant. Interment is in St. Mary?s Cemetery, Ft. Johnson. Calling hours are Tuesday evening from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to St. John?s Church in care of the funeral home.
