My condolences to the family and friends of Mabel Kane. What an impact she had on so many lives.
Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending;
I saw her singing at her work,
And o'er the sickle bending;-
I listened, motionless and still;
And, as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more.

This June, the class of PHS '66 tly met in reunion to celebrate the 40th year since our graduation. Many of us recalled with fondness and respect the contagious enthusiasm that Mrs. Kane brought to her English Literature class. She challenged us in a way that very few teachers had. It was with great sadness that we learned of her passing. She touched many young lives in the most positive of ways. I regret that we were not able to express these sentiments to her personally but I am sure she knew how special she was to so many of us. Our condolences for your and our loss.

A group of graduates of Poughkeepsie High School, classes of '65 and '66 got together for a reunion two weeks ago in Poughkeepsie. People talked about Mrs. Kane repeatedly and wondered where she was living. You can imagine our shock when that very Sunday, her obituary appeared in the local paper! We were sorry that we didn't get to tell her about the tremendous impact she had on each of us. She was a gem.

I was also a student of Mrs. Kane, PHS Class of 1971. She was my favorite teacher, an inspiration, and one who inspired in me a love of English literature that persists to this day. She exhibited an "ecstasy" about her subject that I still remember. I still value the volume of Wordsworth that she helped me acquire and will always remember her with gratitude. What a wonderful woman and teacher!

I am so sorry to hear of Mabel's death. I am glad Mom has so many happy memmories of visiting her at the lake. We are all indebted to Mabel for sharing so many stories about the family, letters, and pictures.
I wish we could have seen more of your family, but we seem to have drifted apart for a while after my brother was painted blue in the woods behind Boyd's camp. However, in the last so many years, Mom has really enjoyed exchanging tapes with Mabel and visiting. There was always something to laugh about. Once, a repairman friend looked at one and then the other and could not tell which was Mabel. More laughs came when they wanted to donate a cake and neither could read the labels on the new oven. I wish I could have been with them.
My heart goes out to you children and your families. We will all miss her.

I was very saddened to return from a conference in Virginia and hear my Aunt Marge's Whipple voicemail about Mabel's death. Mabel was a special lady and I have many wonderful memories of time spent with her at both Green and Canada Lakes. She and my mother also spent a lot of enjoyable times together and I joined them whenever I could. I will miss her and send my sincere sympathy to her children and grandchildren.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs Kane. She was a great teacher and I was fortunate enough to be a student of her at Poughkeepsie High, Class of 1967. Her enthusiasm for English literature and language was contagious. To this day I still enjoy English poetry and Shakespeare.I was fortunate to speak with her at the 1997 reunion and tell her of the impact she made on my life.

I offer my sincere condolences to Mabel Kane's family. I was also a student of Mrs. Kane at Spackenkill High School in the late 70's. Her English class was one of the highlights of my senior year. She always had such a kind heart and was so supportive of her students. I remember fondly the challenge of 'translating' the Canterbury Tales and enjoying other fine literature under her tutelage. I will always remember her.

I am very sad to have come across this news moments ago. Mrs. Kane was a professional and personal inspiration to me, especially in the 1977-78 school year. I credit to her the fact that I've become an English teacher, especially early English literature, and also that in general through the years my despair is in check. The trip she organized to England in '78 is the only time I've traveled anywhere significant and far, and I've got a photo of her with a cup of tea on an early drizzly London morning. I will never forget her. "And gladly wolde she lerne and gladly teche."

I would like to send my condolences to the family of Mabel Kane. I was a student of Mrs. Kane at Spackenkill H.S. in the late 70's. English had always been my favorite subject in school but I have to say,Mrs Kane's method of teaching and great spirit made her class my favorite. A great memory I have is coming to class one day and listening to Mrs Kane's recording of Leon Redbone. It was fun and quirky and to this day whenever I hear or see Leon Redbone I think of Mabel Kane and everything she opened up to us in a little english class in high school

i would also like to extend my condolences to Mrs. Kane's family. Until just this past year, Mrs. Kane and I corresponded at Christmas with messages full of pleasant memories about English Literature class at Spackenkill HS and our trip to England in 1977. It was Mabel Kane who inspired me to become an English teacher. I remember how she led me to read Keats and how we had to memorize Chaucer. Each spring I still recite those opening words. She will always be a part of who I am and I will always hold her dear in my heart. She was an amazing woman.
